#2 West Cafe Patio Arbor & three Gateways #3 & 7

Updated 1/25/19

Here are two other pieces of info you may need for the quote.  I updated the blog also to include these.  If you have any other questions let me know.

Height of vertical 2x2 posts is 9'  (I will remeasure and confirm this before fabrication)
Each gateway has a curved piece of flat steel.  This is 1/4 thick and 2 inches wide.

This page is divided into two Sections

1. Detailed Description of the Arbor and three Gateways. Read this first to understand the completed project consisting of steel and copper construction.

2. Specification for the Steel Fabricator. This section is the portion of the project to be quoted by the steel fabricator. The steel components are straight forward and simple in construction.

West Café Patio Arbor Model
Scale:  ½ inch = 1 foot

1.  Detailed Description of the Arbor and three Gateways

Figure 1 shows the location of the planned arbor and three gateways just off of the cafe patio at the Hospice of Davidson County, NC (HODC) facility.  The model (Figure 2) is the design of the arbor that will attach to the soffit of the building and span over the existing uncovered concrete patio at HODC.  Figure 3 is the same model image with dimensions.  Figure 4 is a plan showing the dimensions.

The arbor cover is constructed of round copper pipe.  The vertical supports are 2”x2” square steel channel.  The lightweight overhead copper pipe runs in two directions as shown and is supported by vertical steel on two sides and the soffit of the patio on the other two sides.  The copper’s size and placement provides a spacious overhead architecture capable of supporting a light vine covering. The model shows the small 12x12 inch boxwoods that are already planted.
There are two gateways into the cafe arbor.  One is from the brick walk that comes from the parking area.  The second one leads from the arbor into the serenity garden.
A third gateway entrance in the same design as the second one described above is will be added at the south entrance to the garden from the parking lot.
The copper pipe that will be given a verdigris patina ( weathered blue-green finish).  The square channel will be painted black and then given a verdigre patina.  This finish is simulated in the model.

Note, all figures below will enlarge if you click on them.

Figure 1:  The arbor has four major components.

Three Gateways: two gateways supporting the arbor are show as #3 from the parking lot and #3 into the garden from the arbor.  The third gateway to the garden is located off the parking lot sidewalk, lower right, #7.  #7 has the same design as #3 into the Garden.

Figure 4 Dimensioned plan

Figure 3 and 4 above show the approximate dimensions of the arbor and gateways.  On-site measures will be required by the fabricator or provided to the fabricator.

  • Height of vertical 2x2 posts is 9'  (I will remeasure and confirm this before fabrication)
  • Each gateway has a curved piece of flat steel.  This is 1/4 thick and 2 inches wide.

Figure 5 explains the characteristics of the support 2x2 posts.  Six are set in concrete supports just off the walks and others are attached directly to the concrete patio.  The tops of posts 1, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12,13 and 14 have brackets attached to the posts.  This is illustrated in Figure 6.

The slight tilt upward (105 degrees to the post) of the bracket is to provide a slight arch in the copper pipe to counter the downward bend toward the crest line of the arbor as denoted in Figure 6.  Figure 7 is a typical round base plate.

Figure 6 Vertical 2x2 Posts Detail (not to scale)
Where copper pipe crosses over other copper pipe, the two pipes will be bound by a wrapping of 12 gauge copper.  The diameter of the copper pipe will be 1/2 inch in diameter or larger depending on the requirement to span the distance.

2.  Specification for the Steel Fabricator

Figure 7 includes the components of the arbor that are made of steel.  Three Gateways are to be built using two designs are described above.  There are four free standing steel 2x2 supports as numbered: 7, 8, 13 and 14.

Figure 7 Steel Components to be fabricated in steel.

The following is required for the Steel Fabricator quote:

1.  Build Gateway #3 - posts 1 through 6 as illustrated in Section 1
2.  Build two Gateways #3 - posts 9 through 12
3.  Build four posts 7, 8, 13 and 14
5.  Tops of posts have brackets as described.  Figure 7 shows the configurations for the brackets.
    - Six posts have one bracket oriented as shown: 1, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 14
    - Two posts 6 & 7 have two brackets oriented as shown: 6 and 7
6.  Base of all posts have a square bracket as illustrate in Figure 6.  Each bracket is to have four 1/4 dia holes at the corners centered between the corner edge and the 2x2 post welded to the plate.
7. All surfaces to be smooth to touch and primed for rust.
8. Components to be delivered after inspection in the shop by Consilium to HODC on a schedule TBD
9.  Optional Item to Quote:  Installation of the three gateways and free standing posts.  The six posts requiring a footing will be provided by Consilium.
