| 2/2/2018 Example of Donor Recognition - Legacies of Love |
Updated 1/12/2018
This update is based on the conversation at HODC in a December 2017
The image below shows an irregular stone with a flat surface that is cut so that it can be placed on a flat surface. An engraved flat label can be affixed to this type of stone as shown in the rectangular outline.

Stones will be no taller than five inches but vary in length.
The engraving can be done locally in Lexington at Danko Engraving, click here.
The image below from the Danko Engraving website (sorry it is small) shows a panel of engraving materials that are only a sample of what is available. These are man-made durable materials that hold up to our weather conditions. The surface colors I would recommend would be on the natural tans/browns. When engraved, the revealed colors are white, but there are other darker options. These are affordable and can be in varying dimensions depending on the text to be etched.

From the HODC conversation, I understand that is the direction we are going to take.
HODC would provide a batch of labels needed to Danko and the labels would be produced. The stone could be from Jacob's Creek, cut as illustrated. Perhaps a batch of these stones in various sized would be cut at one time and "stored" on the Legacies of Love cafe water feature shelve, until they are needed. The labeled stones would be placed among the unlabeled ones in an arrangement. When new labels are added, the blank stones can be removed and the labels affixed to them. This flexibility is recommended.
The next step is to get a list from HODC of the actual engravings needed in the near term and execute this solution with HODC participation. Danko would order the material based on the selections available. The material comes in flat sheets that would be retained and used for all the labels in the near term and later. The fonts are numerous.

Jan said the donor wall will be called “Legacies of love”
1. 1/26/2017, followup to the content below. From the brochure produced by Jan, there is an item entitled "Legacies of Love" that stated $250 each on the walls surround the West Cafe' patio Water Feature, Legacies of Love provides opportunities for memorial and honorary gifts to remember and recognize loved ones. The solution is TBD but would be artful and can be engraved with names. Each may be somewhat different, but the same size and installed on the left portion of the #12 water feature. This needs exploration by Dan, Chip and Jan and a decision by HODC. We can start with the Pinterest Board, Click here.
2. Update by Dan Smith 1/24/2017:
On 1/4/17 Jan, Dan and Jeff McKinney (Jacob's Creek Stone Co, Inc) met to discuss stone to be used in the garden.
We discussed the donor wall that extends from the covered area off the cafe to the water feature on the concrete patio. See the 1/19/2016 entry below. I am documenting herein the concept we three discussed including a donor book possibility.
Per the diagram below, the idea is to use natural stone provided by Jeff to build a water feature wall of stacked stone, see image below. The stone colors to be used are similar in color to those of the current HODC building column bases: a mix of gray-brown stone.
The water feature would have a basin to collect the cascading water and then recirculate the water as illustrated. Water plants are envisioned for the base. The water would then flow in the basin toward the cafe where it would be recirculated back to the top of the water feature. The stacked stone wall would also extend into the covered area above the flowing water basin. The stone would be dry above the basin in the covered area. The shelves of stone allow for plants or other items of interest (TBD) to be place on the stone. A design for the water feature and wall is pending acceptance of the concept. The current budget allows for the water feature, but not the extension into the cafe and any donor recognition.

3. At the 1/19/2016 Garden Steering Committee meeting, the following general description of a Donor Recognition Wall was described to the attendees by Dan Smith.
The image below has been modified at the top left to show the area that is a proposed wall for donor recognition. Currently it is a plain brick wall that extends under the covered outside area for café seating. The proposal is to integrate the proposed Café Patio Water Feature (12) into the wall display. Along the wall would be shelves of stone where donor recognition elements (e.g., etched stone, etched glass, ceramic, metal) would be placed. The stone shelves would flow gradually from the left toward the water feature and may include light and water. The wall would integrate the building to the garden in a gradual transitioning to the outside.
In addition, donor recognition in a similar fashion (e.g., etched glass, ceramic, metal) could be part of the large Arbor Room Waterfall Sculpture (1). Major donor items such as artwork, could have individual recognition etched stone adjacent to the work. This brief description is an idea that can be explored further by the Garden Steering Committee.
See image below of a stacked stone water feature being proposed for the donor wall, water feature 12 and 1.
